Donation & Sponsorship Opportunities

Omega Psi Phi Sigma Iota Scholarship Fund

For over 15 years Sigma Iota Chapter has funded scholarships to African American high school seniors matriculating at 4 year colleges or universities through the Omega Psi Phi Sigma Iota Scholarship Fund.  Maintaining and growing this fund is critical to the ongoing success of Sigma Iota Scholarship Awards Programs.  Over the last 4 years Sigma Iota Chapter has awarded over $20,000 to worthy students throughout Oakland and the Bay Area.

Percy H. Steele, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament

Percy Steele, a long time member of Omega Psi Phi and Sigma Iota Chapter was a stalwart leader in the African American Community.  Born in 1920 in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, Percy Steele graduated from North Carolina Central College, after which he attended Atlanta University, where he completed a Master’s degree. He was a staff member and organization secretary for the Washington, D.C. Urban League, Program Director of the Neighborhood Housing and the Urban League Service Council Director in Morristown, New Jersey, and Executive Director of the San Diego Urban League and the Bay Area Urban League.  A committed consensus builder who worked with people of all racial and ethnic backgrounds, Steele was also highly regarded in his profession. He was recognized for his outstanding work by the National Association of Social Workers, the National Association of Black Social Workers, and the Council of Executives of the National urban League.  He died in San Francisco in 2002.

In honor of Percy Steele, since 2002 Sigma Iota annually hosts our Percy H. Steele, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament.  Proceeds from the golf tournament are infused into the Omega Psi Phi Sigma Iota Scholarship Fund and used for annual scholarship awards.  Several sponsorship opportunities are in place for corporations and individuals to participate in this very worthy cause.

Purple & Gold Scholarship Ball

Sigma Iota annual hosts a Purple & Gold Scholarship Ball.  The Purple & Gold Ball represents an opportunity to celebrate the successes of our youth throughout Oakland and the Bay Area and with over 250 attendees and growing, it has become a vital program to raise funds for the Omega Psi Phi Sigma Iota Scholarship Fund.  As with our Percy H. Steele, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament, the Purple & Gold Scholarship Ball provides several sponsorship opportunities for corporations and individuals to participate in aiding the scholarly advancement of our youth.

Youth Mentoring and Community Service

With the significant growth in our youth mentoring and community service initiatives, in 2009 Sigma Iota Chapter created sponsorship and donation opportunities for corporations and individuals to support these community-based programs.  Youth mentoring contributions are used to support educational program material development, quarterly outings (corporate, academic, cultural, social), and technology acquisition and maintenance.  In addition, community service contributions are used to support several programs including our annual back-to-school (school supply) drive, Oakland Children's Hospital holiday party, West Oakland Community holiday party and toy drive, safety awareness days, and neighborhood beautification days.
